No Stopping Andy Mapple OBE

19th August 2002

Andy Mapple was celebrating last night having won his 9th US Open title. Andy was honoured earlier this year with an OBE and with this remarkable 9th title, there seems to be no stopping this World Class athlete.

“For years Andy has been at the top of his sport and with this, his 9th US Open title, he continues to surpass everyone in the field,” said John Wood, Performance Director. “What is truly amazing is that Andy improves on his own performance year in, year out; and we are very happy indeed that Andy gained the recognition that he deserves when he was honoured with an OBE.”

Andy Mapple OBE was awarded his medal in this years Queens Birthday Honours list for services to water skiing. Andy is six times World Champion and although he now resides in Orlando, Florida he truly British. His first World title came in 1981 at Thorpe, England. His sixth and latest world title came 20 years later in Recetto, Italy. With the World Championships held every two years that makes six wins from 11 competitions and only once in this time did he fail to make a podium place. He is universally acknowledged as the greatest slalom skier of all-time, having held the World slalom record since 1985. No one in water skiing has ever come anywhere near matching his achievements and he remains as competitive as ever and is always the man to beat off the dock.
