Northern Ireland can be very proud of its karate team after last week’s WKC World Karate Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia. David Brashaw, from Newtownards once again showed his class as he doubled up on golds, retaining his Senior Men’s Wado Ryu Kata title and adding the Veteran’s title as well.

His colleague, Esporta manager, Cathy McAleer became the first girl from GB and Ireland to lift a Senior WKC gold by winning the Ladies Wado Ryu kata event. She went on to lead the ladies team (Sonia Ferris and Leona McFadden) to a magnificent bronze in the kumite, losing out narrowly in the semi final to the eventual winners, AAU from USA.

John McFadden put in a great performance at his first world event, marginally missing out on a place in the kata final. Team manager Jeff Hillis fought a tremendous first round match and lost only by a single point in extra time to the eventual Serbian world champion.

However the tally of three gold and three bronze was enough to secure 7th place in the final tournament medal table, a championship best in karate history for Northern Ireland. New World Champion Cathy added 'Hopefully our successes will inspire the Northern Ireland children’s team for next year’s Junior World Championships.'
