Individual Winners; Adam Dowd - Cadets, Ryan Asquith - Intermediates, Connor Barlow - Juniors
Over 300 anglers representing 52 teams turned out for the 2006 NFA Championships held on the Bridgewater Canal, Warrington.
Fortunately the weather had changed from the intensive heat of earlier in the week and although a little overcast the conditions were perfect. Nearly all of the competitors caught on the day, proving it was an excellent choice of venue.

Intermediate Team Champions 2006 - Garbolino North West
In the Intermediate competition it was Ryan Asquith of Smartbait Leeds, who took top honours with a winning weight of 4.62kg.
He started out the match catching silver fish consistently, alternating between 3m and 11m.
However half way through he changed tactics and fished the far side at 16m.
He fed chopped worm and caster, using red maggot as hook bait he managed to catch 4 bream which eventually proved to be decisive.
“I knew there were a few others in my section catching well, but it was a bonus to catch the bream. I can’t believe I won the national. I’ll definitely be back next year” said Ryan.
In the team event it was reigning champions Garbolino North West; although fishing under a new name, who were able to repeat their success from last year.
They beat home favourites Warrington Anglers Gold by 8 points, with Mosella Farnborough Gold picking up bronze.

Junior Team Champions 2006 - Barnsley & District A
In the Junior competition things were a little closer with just half a kilogram separating the top 5 and less than 10 grams between the top two.
In the end Connor Barlow, Garbolino North West, came out on top.
He used chopped worm and squats, alternating between 11m & 14.5m.
Even the presence of a cow drinking in his swim and a boat owner throwing his dog’s dinner overboard didn’t prevent him taking the title!
“I still can’t believe I won. When the cow walked in my swim I got really angry as I thought that was my chance gone. The fish were obviously used to it as they came back in quite quickly and I was able to keep catching” said a jubilant Connor.
The team event proved to be even closer with only 3 points separating the top three. This time it was Barnsley & District AA with 115 points who took gold.
Mosella Farnborough came second with 114 points, closely followed by Garbolino North West with 113 points.

Cadet Team Champions 2006 - Smartbait Leeds
The Cadet competition was dominated by Smartbait Leeds who took a clean sweep of medals.
Adam Dowd led the way, fishing down the middle using caster proved successful. He chose to feed hemp & caster, adding some worm at regular intervals.
He was really pleased with his win, particularly as his team mates picked up silver & bronze.
In the team event it was no surprise that Smartbait came out on top, winning by 9 points.
However it was extremely close for second as Boston & District AA tied on 19 points with Worksop & District AA; beating them on weight by half a kilogram.
The event was a huge success and proved that the future of match angling is in safe hands. It will be interesting to watch these youngsters compete at the Junior Fish O’Mania in two weeks time to see who comes out on top.
The NFA wishes to express it’s thanks to it’s match committee who once again did an excellent job; the hosts Warrington AA and their stewards for providing such a great venue; and Van Den Eynde for donating additional prizes to all the winners and teams.
