Singapore clinches three medals at 8 th Asian Karate-do Federation Junior and Cadet Karate-do Championships with gold medal in female team kata event

(Singapore, 25 August 2006 ) Host Singapore picked up their opening gold medal on day one of the 8th Asian Karate Federation Junior and Cadet Championship through the supreme effort of Ng Pei Yi, Natalie Tang and Adeline Liew in the Female Team Kata category.

The trio had earlier brushed aside  Hong Kong in their opening match to secure a  shot a the gold medal with Macau who had defeated  favourite Malaysia .And with the crowd support behind them which included the Parlimentary Secretary Teo Ser Luck, the Singaporeans rose to the occasion to convince the judges that they were worthy winner.

Victory was made sweeter when Adeline also won the silver medal in the Female Junior Individual Kata event and Ng Pei Yi taking home the bronze medal for the Female Cadet Kata event.

Said Team Singapore Head Coach, "I am happy with the three medals which we won today. The girls were in good form and did their best. I'm very proud of Adeline who had tried her best in the finals against her Japanese opponent who is also the 2005 World Karate-do Federation Female Junior Individual Kata Champion. Pei Yi also did well within expectations of a medal and I'm sure with the few months ahead, we will be giving her extra intensive training in her preparation for the 2006 Doha Asian Games in December.

Other medal highlights include powerhouse Japan making a clean sweep in all five events which it had taken part.

Defending Champion Mogi Yuki defeated Iran finalist Farid Haghighi in the Cadet Male Individual Kata while compatriot Kajikawa Rimi secured a Gold in the Cadet Female Individual Kata against Malaysian's Quah Beng Huai.

Oki Itaru clinched the Junior Male Individual Kata title against Iran 's Davuad Sahecheaghi and Japan's female team lead by 2003 World Champion Yuka Sato, defeated Chinese Taipei in the Female Junior Team Kumite event.

Usami Rika won the Junior Female Individual Kata title after defeating Singapore 's Adeline Liew at the finals.

Karate action continues tomorrow (Saturday) at the Jurong East Sports Hall from 9am onwards with Cadet Male Individual Kumite and Junior Female Individual Kumite events.
