The new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport is James Purnell MP. Mr Purnell was advisor to Tony Blair on culture, media and sport from 1997-2001, as well as an under-secretary of state at the department from 2005-2006. To read Mr Purnell's biography click here.

CCPR will be taking the earliest opportunity to welcome all new appointments relevant to the work of the sector and to inform new ministers of the contribution and potential sport and recreation have to offer to departments’ public policy goals.

Tessa Jowell MP has been appointed as Minister for the Olympics and London.

The Government Olympic Executive will remain within DCMS and will report to Tessa Jowell, who will be based in the Cabinet Office and will attend cabinet.

The newly created Department for Children, Schools and Families will have joint responsibility for the promotion of youth sport.
