AMSSP organizes sporting events for 36 schools within Ascot & Maidenhead each year, aiming to encourage more young people to take part in sport or physical activity more often. Emma Fitzgerald, Partnership Development Manager said “this will be a true celebration of primary school rugby. Coaches have been working in a number of our schools in the lead up to this competition, and we are very happy to be working with Maidenhead RFC to be able to signpost those who are interested in continuing their rugby at an excellent local rugby club”
In total over 400 children took part including those who regularly play in the Maidenhead RFC Mini Section each Sunday.
The tournament took the form of a group round, followed by a knockout round so each team will play at least 3 matches. All schools will enter a squad of 10 players, of which at least 3 are girls.
In the Year 5/6 event, Oldfield Primary School who the event. They were ably coached by the MRFC CEO, John Wanklyn. Along with the losing finalist, Furze Platt, they will go on to represent AMSSP at the Berkshire County Final on Wednesday 24th March. In the Year 3/4 event, Oldfield also came out on top.
John Wanklyn, CEO and Chairman of Maidenhead RFC commented "Maidenhead is a Community Rugby Club and supporting Charters School Partnership by hosting events like this is part of our commitment to help develop rugby through the School community as well as through our normal Youth Section activities at the Club. Our aim is to introduce more children to Rugby within our local community and hopefully many will want to take it up more seriously and join the Club as a result. Schools 7 a-side tag rugby is an excellent introduction to the sport and develops a lot of the key skills for the full game. This is especially relevant now that 7’s is an Olympic Sport so the opportunity to identify and develop Young talent is even more important."
