Recurve archery Emma Downie overshadowed her international colleagues by taking first place in the opening National Series tournament of the year, at Evesham. Emma beat reigning champion Charlotte Burgess into second place, with Alison Williamson third, and Michelle Kiddy taking fourth. In the men's recurve event, it was first blood to Larry Godfrey, seeing off Meriden AC's Craig Bowley to take first place. Simon Terry, who won the inaugural National Series men's recurve championship last year, started this campaign with third place, with Jonathan Shales fourth. Duncan Busby is the only defending champion to start this year with a win, as he took the men's compound title at Evesham. He beat Nottingham based student Matt Arnold into second place, with Liam Grimwood third, and Paul Rudge fourth. And in the compound women's event, Andrea Gales took the honours from Colchester's Anna King, Nichola Simpson and Rikki Bingham.
