Young British archers have made an encouraging start to their campaign at the European Junior Cup, taking place in Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Six of the 18 GB archers involved have already made it through to the second round of the head to heads, while there were some very good performances in the qualifying of the compound tournaments.

In the junior recurve men, Glen Croft and James Mortlock have progressed - James beating GB teammate Sean Evans in his first round head-to-head match.

Tom Barber suffered a setback when he was beaten by Aliaksei Kuzmin of Belarus, but he will be lining up with James and Glen in the team event, with GB seeded 10th. They take on the Czech Republic in the first round.

In the junior recurve women's tournament, Hannah Beasley Suffolk progressed from round one with a comprehensive win over another Belarus archer, Natalia Pranevic. But Catherine Harwood fell at the first hurdle, as did Abbie Fisher in the cadet recurve women tourament.

But Rebecca Martin, who qualified in 17th place, and Jenna Derrevar (26th) both earned themselves a bye into round two. Collectively, Rebecca, Jenna and Abbie qualified in seventh for the team tournament, and have a first round bye.

In the cadet recurve men, Ashe Morgan went through in 18th from qualification, and made it through to round two of the head-to-heads with victory over Finland's Teemu Rasanen. But Jamie Fisher and Keiron Slater both went out in the first round, and will now be concentrating on the team tournament. With Ashe, they are seeded 12th, and take on Ukraine in the first round.

In the compound, Mary Perrott and Kirsty Davies qualified in fifth and sixth place respectively for the head to heads of the junior women.  Kirsty now takes on fellow Brit Zoe Coggins in the first head-to-head, Zoe going through in 11th. Mary will be up against Italy's Federica Zanotti.

Aalin George went through in sixth place in the women's cadet and now takes on Maja Orlic of Croatia. In the men's compound cadet, Ben Humphreys will take on Russia's Nikolay Avdeev in the first round.
