Digger, the London Irish RFC mascot, travelled to Aldermaston RFC on the 17th October 2010, to support teams from six local primary schools competing in the Aldermaston Junior Rugby Schools Tag Tournament.

Almost 200 children and parents coming from Aldermaston, Calcot, Silchester, Tadley, Thatcham Park and Whitelands Schools competed in two age groups U5/6s and U7/8s. Teams were made up of 7 players, boys and girls, playing several matches, each made up of two 5-minute halves.

London Irish RFC take pride in supporting local events that help to get our kids involved in rugby at an early age. They added their support to the Aldermaston coaches with Ben Lee (Community Coach), Chris Miles (Community and Business Development Director) and Digger lending a hand; making friends with all the parents and children alike. One 5-year old rugby player said ‘Digger is really nice when you get to know him’.

Following three hours full of fast-running, amazing and agile side steps, Tadley claimed victory in the upper age group, withCalcot runners up, and Whitelands beat Calcot into second place again in the lower age group.

London Irish supplied Medals for each of the players in the two winning teams as well a tickets to their next LV Cup game at the Madejski Stadium, with Aldermaston RFC providing the winners with trophies and the runners up medals. All the kids went home happily clutching their RFU goodie bags, which contained posters, stickers, rulers and not forgetting a few sweets for the journey home.
