The perfect summer weather changed dramatically off the North East Coast on Sunday morning (10th August) with 40knt winds and electrical storms. Humber Coastguard were handling over 16 incidents including three simultaneous mayday calls. Lifeboats from Hartlepool, Redcar, Teesmouth and Staithes were launched as well as a helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

The freak weather forced a RIB with six local divers from the SCARS club aground near Redcar, though they managed to free themselves before the lifeboat arrived. The helicopter was diverted to the Farnes to airlift two divers showing signs of decompression sickness to recompression facilities in Aberdeen.
