Daley Tops of Top Week for Junior Divers with Platform Gold
Tom Daley topped off the best week ever for Britain’s divers at a World Junior Diving Championships with gold in the Boys A Platform event.
Daley looked in imperious form throughout the heats session and was consistent through the finals, scoring 10s for his final dives to finish with a score of 663.95 to take gold over 50 points ahead of the field.
“I’m really happy with my performance today,” said Daley. “Scoring straight ten’s on my last two dives was on of my best achievements.
“It has been an amazing week by the whole team and will be tough to beat.
“I’m looking forward to a break now and chilling out a bit before the nationals in February.”
Yang Jian of China took silver with 611.95 with his teammate Chen Aisen in third with 597.20
Daley’s teammate Daniel Goodfellow was 18th overall with a score of 443.90.
Lydia Rosenthall was also in action in the Girls B 3m Platform and she pulled out all the stops in a long preliminary session to match her European ranking to go into the final session ranked a superb 4th place. She was a little down on her required scores; however three solid optional dives pulled her up through the field with a score of 349.50
In the final, the 14-year-old from Leeds couldn’t quite maintain the morning’s form and finished in 11th place with a score of 323.15.
Julian Bellan, Junior Development Manager for Diving was delighted with his team’s performance in what has been the most successful meet by a team at the Junior World Championships ever with six medals.
“This week has been out of this world and Tom was phenomenal today,” said Bellan. “In some ways there was more pressure on him here because he had an Olympic medal.
“The standard of the field has been higher than any recent World Junior Diving Championships in all events, but especially in the platform. Tom held it together and completely nailed his dives scoring well deserved 10s.
“This has been the most successful championships by far, we have won three gold, two silver and one bronze medal to finish second in the medal table.
“We have had lots of finalists, some in their first final at a competition at this level. The team spirit has been brilliant and Tom has proved a great mentor and role model for the team.”
