Miley completes European hat-trick with medley gold

25th November 2012

Hannah Miley completed her hat-trick of medals with 400m Individual Medley gold on the final day of the European Short Course Championships in Chartres.

Competing in her signature event, the World Championship silver medallist qualified fastest for the final before clocking a European record 4:23.47 to top the podium.

Having also won silvers in the 200m Individual Medley and 800m Freestyle in France, Miley became the first British swimmer to win three individual medals at a European Short Course Championships since Susan Rolph in 1999.

And the Scot admitted: "I'm shocked that I was that fast. Last year I went 4:26 and I was hoping to clock the same time again this week or maybe go a little quicker.
"To post that time for a new European Record is amazing. This week has been good for me even though tonight was very tough. I thought Katinka (Hosszu) was going to come past me at the end but I dug deep to hold on.”

Hosszu of Hungary took the silver in 4:23.91 while her team mate Zsuzsanna Jakabos claimed bronze in 4:25.61.

Miley will now turn her attention to the World Short Course Championships taking place in Istanbul from 12 – 16 December.

Great Britain’s Aimee Willmott also qualified for the 400m Individual Medley final and set a personal best 4:32.56 to finish fourth.

Teenagers Craig Benson and Karley Mann impressed in their first senior international finals in Chartres.

Having qualified fourth fastest with a PB in the heats, Mann finished sixth in the 200m Backstroke final with a time of 2:06.16.

London 2012 Olympian Benson also lowered his PB from the heats to finish sixth in the 200m Breaststroke in 2:07.02.

Antony James was the British Gas GBR Swimming Team’s final competitor of the night, finishing 12th in the 50m Butterfly in 23.53.
