Dan Hunt joins Team Sky as sporting director

2nd January 2013

Dan Hunt, who coached Great Britain's men to Olympic team pursuit gold at the London 2012 Olympics, has joined Team Sky as a sporting director.

Team Sky announced the appointment of Hunt, who helped its riders Geraint Thomas and Peter Kennaugh to Olympic gold in August, on its website.

Hunt said: "I want to learn the races and re-learn the job of a sports director. But maybe also bring different things to the table, because I'm not an ex-pro.

"I haven't ridden these races, so I've got a bit of homework to do.

"I need to expose myself to as much racing as possible to maximise my learning over the first year.

"I want to be good at this. I want to be a good DS (directeur sportif) and it's going to take time to get there."

Hunt worked with Team Sky in its inaugural season in 2010, dovetailing his work on the road with his coaching position on the track within British Cycling before focusing on the latter as the Olympics drew near.

"I don't think it gets any better than Olympic gold at a home Olympics from a coaching point of view," added Hunt, who led the women's coaching group for the 2008 Olympics.

"It's a great time to bow out and start a new challenge and I'm really excited about the project."

Hunt will start his season at the Mallorca Challenge next month and is part of a new-look coaching group at Team Sky following the departures of Sean Yates and Steven de Jongh last year.
