Boris to welcome Seb Coe and country's sports leaders
18th May 2013Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, will welcome politicians, businesses and grassroots projects to City Hall ahead of the anniversary of the 2012 Games. The gathering, led by Beyond Sport ambassador Lord Seb Coe, former Chairman of London 2012 and Chairman of the British Olympic Association, will come together to celebrate and reward sports community programmes and standout individuals inspired and influenced by the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Beyond London 2012 Awards – organised by global sport for social change organisation Beyond Sport – will be held at City Hall, London, on 15th July. Beyond Sport is backed by London 2012 partners BT and Procter & Gamble as it works to further boost the community impact of the Games, rewarding those leading the way in education, health and social inclusion amongst other issues.
"London 2012 gave this country a once in a lifetime opportunity to boost sport’s place as the unseen social worker," said Lord Coe. "As we look to the future it is important that those programmes and projects which have successfully capitalised on the opportunity are rewarded, and that the UK does not lose sight of the future opportunities in this area."
Lord Coe and Mayor Johnson will join a group of around 200 of the country’s leaders in sport, business, development and government at City Hall. A series of donations to community projects from major businesses through the Beyond Sport Foundation will be announced on the night, with the recipients decided through an Awards programme.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who is set to present the first award of the ceremony, said: "London 2012 set out to inspire people to get active and enjoy sport. These awards are a testimony to the army of unsung heroes who are striving to keep the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games alive in our communities. Their role in delivering a legacy of sports participation is vital and is the bedrock of my own grassroots sports programme."
