Open Water swimmers selected for World Championships

31st May 2013

Britain’s top Open Water swimmers have been selected for the FINA World Championships in Barcelona this summer.

Current World Champion Keri-anne Payne (Warrender) and Olympian Dan Fogg (British Gas Loughborough ITC) were automatically selected following their placings in London 2012 where they finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Fogg recently swam to his best ever international open water result taking gold at the fourth leg of the FINA 10km Marathon World Cup in Mexico whilst Payne will make her 2013 Open
Water debut at the Open Water test event in Barcelona in June.

The experienced duo will be joined by senior international debutants Jack Burnell, Fogg’s Loughborough team mate, and Danielle Huskisson (University of Stirling) who qualified at the Portuguese Open Water Nationals in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal last week.

Battling 30mph winds and cold temperatures, Burnell and Huskisson overcame the cold conditions to finish as the top-ranked British swimmers booking their berth to Barcelona.

British Swimming Head Coach Bill Furniss said: “We have a good mix of experience and youth on the team for the World Championships this year.

“British Swimming has a strong tradition in this event and Jack and Danielle will learn a lot from both Keri-anne and Dan and also from the competition itself, which is important at the start of the next Olympic cycle.

The British Gas GBR Open Water Swimming team is:

  • Daniel Fogg – British Gas ITC Loughborough
  • Jack Burnell – British Gas ITC Loughborough
  • Keri-anne Payne – Warrender
  • Danielle Huskisson – University of Stirling
