I knew I had to take the first two laps out hard. My biggest opposition was the Russian, so my plan was to take the first two laps out hard, let him pass me, follow him until he tired and then I knew I’d have the confidence to take him near the finish.
My confidence grew as the finish got closer, and I felt really strong. I knew I could win. If a better man beat me that’s fine, but I was always hoping to win. As you run quicker you gain in confidence, and it allowed me to relax and have confidence in what I was doing.
I’ve been steeplechasing competitively for four years now, but I used to play at steeplechase in the garden with my brother growing up, so I’ve always been a big fan.
It feels awesome – I’m relieved, but really happy. This is the perfect end to my season and I couldn’t have hoped for better.
