Evans and Woodbridge confirmed for World Championships

7th August 2013

Nineteen-year-old Joe Evans and double Olympian Nick Woodbridge have both been confirmed in the British team to compete at this month’s Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Chinese Taipei.

It means Evans will make his World Championships debut at the end of a season that has already seen him win a bronze medal at his first World Cup in February and climb to 14th in the senior world rankings and third in the juniors.

Confirmation of his inclusion in the final eight-strong squad was delayed to see how he came through the World Junior Championships in Hungary two weeks ago, where he was the highest placed GB male finisher in seventh.

“I am really looking forward to the worlds, it will be my first senior World Championships and something that will be a great experience for me,” said Evans. “I have done a lot of competitions this year and a good performance would finish of my year nicely.”

Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympian Woodbridge has also been given the green light to compete after overcoming recent health problems.

The pair are both currently training at altitude at Font Romeu in the French Pyrenees with the rest of the GB squad ahead of the championships, which take place in Kaohsiung from 21 to 27 August.

The GB team also features Scot Mhairi Spence, who gets the opportunity to defend the World Championship crown she won in Rome in May last year, and Olympic silver medallist Samantha Murray.
