British Swimming to host LEN Congress Conference

7th September 2013

British Swimming will bring together high-ranking officials from European aquatics sports this month when they host the first ever LEN Congress Conference and Exhibition in Edinburgh.

It will be the first time LEN, the European Federation for Aquatics, will host a conference which will focus on issues around governance of the sports, the training of elite coaches and bidding for major international events.

Around 180 delegates will attend The Assembly Rooms and the Roxburghe Hotel to hear how the European federation is progressing under its new leadership. It will also be an opportunity for the leaders of aquatic sports to meet and shape policy and strategy for the future.

British Swimming will present their own plans for major events and these will include the LEN 2016 European Championships which will be held at the London Aquatics Centre.

The inaugural conference, which will be held Friday 27th and Saturday 28th September, will also showcase an exhibition with leading manufactures from around the world.

David Sparkes, British Swimming’s Chief Executive said: “We are delighted to be hosting this LEN Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland where the leaders from around Europe will gather to work through the strategic needs of swimming in Europe.

“We will see our leading coaches starting to plan now their competitive programme for the build up to Rio in 2016 to ensure Europe comes back with more medals in all our sports.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer of EventScotland added: “Scotland is the perfect stage for events and we are delighted to welcome the LEN Congress Conference to Edinburgh this year. Aquatics
play an important part in our annual sporting calendar, and we look forward to welcoming delegates ahead of 2014, when Scotland will of course host the 20th Commonwealth Games, with the diving
competition taking place at Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool.”

Cllr Richard Lewis, Culture & Sport Convener, City of Edinburgh Council, said: “Hosting the LEN Congress will give us a further opportunity to showcase Edinburgh and, more specifically, the recently refurbished and quite magnificent Assembly Rooms.

“As hosts to the Commonwealth Games diving competitions next year, there is obviously a buzz around aquatics in the city, which I’m sure will feed through into the delegates’ discussions and decision-making during their stay.”
