Spence and Fitton set for Hungary World Cup
Former world champion Mhairi Spence makes her comeback from injury and 19-year-old Alice Fitton makes her Modern Pentathlon World Cup debut in Hungary this week.
They feature in a five-strong British team for the event, which gets underway in Kecskemét on Thursday (1 May).
Spence, Britain’s 2012 world champion and London 2012 Olympian, hasn’t competed internationally since the 2013 World Championships in Chinese Taipei in August after being sidelined with an ankle injury.
“It's great to be back competing after injury. I wouldn't be back here now without the help and support of Lottery Funding and those who play the Lottery,” she said.
Fitton, originally from Atherton in Greater Manchester but now based at Pentathlon GB’s National Training Centre at the University of Bath, contests her first World Cup competition.
She was a member of Britain’s gold medal winning women’s team relay trio and came ninth in the individual competition at last year’s World Junior Championships at Székesfehérvár in Hungary.
Kate French completes the trio of British women in Kecskemét. She returns to action just over a week after finishing sixth at the Chengdu World Cup in China, the highest World Cup finish of her career to date. She will be aiming to cement her place at the World Cup Final in the USA in June.
The young GB pairing of Tom Toolis and Luke Tasker contest the men’s event in Kecskemét. Toolis, aged 21, competes at his third World Cup, while 20-year-old Tasker made his World Cup debut in Chengdu recently.
