Brits to continue preparations with Mare Nostrum swims

14th May 2014

Britain’s top swimmers will head to Spain next month to compete in the 2014 Barcelona Mare Nostrum.

In the first major event since the British Gas Swimming Championships, over 40 British athletes will compete against top international swimmers during the two day event from 14-15 June.

Among them will be British Gas National Centre Loughborough swimmer Fran Halsall who won 50m Freestyle bronze at the World Championships in Barcelona last year.

Joining Halsall will be British Gas National Centre Bath swimmers Jemma Lowe, Georgia Davies and Lizzie Simmonds all of whom claimed medals during the 2013 Mare Nostrum series.

British Swimming Head Coach Bill Furniss said: “The calibre of the competition at Barcelona is expected to be high so this will be a good opportunity for our athletes to push themselves ahead of the summer competitions.”

The Mare Nostrum swimming circuit is made up of three meetings staged around the Mediterranean. Many of the athletes will also compete in earlier stages of the series in Monaco (7-8 June) and Canet, France (11-12 June).
