British team set for European Junior Championships

8th July 2014

A team of elite junior swimmers have headed to Dordrecht, Netherlands, to take part in the LEN European Junior Championships which starts tomorrow (9 July).

The competition is an important development opportunity for junior athletes and a chance to experience competing on an international stage.
Head of Performance Pathway for Swimming, Tim Jones, said: “The European Junior Championships is one of our benchmark meets and a great opportunity for our younger swimmers to experience an international competition.
“A clear challenge for our sport is to successfully transition some of our good juniors into medal winning senior athletes, and this meet is a vital part of that process.
“We saw some strong performances at the British Gas International Swimming Meet last month in Manchester with a number of the swimmers posting personal best times. The challenge will now be to take this momentum and use it to compete against other talented young swimmers on the European stage.”
British S9 Champion Matt Wylie is among six British Para-Swimming athletes selected to join the British Gas GBR Swimming team.

This will be the first time multi-classification events are included within the LEN European Junior Championships.

British Para-Swimming Performance Pathway Manager Craig Nicholson believes it is a welcome addition to the schedule.

He said: “It’s great to see the inclusion of Para-Swimming into the European Junior Championships. We have selected six swimmers that have varying experience but they all will learn something from competing.

“I think that swimming alongside an integrated team will be great for our athletes and I look forward to seeing strong performances throughout the week.”
