Relay team wins gold on opening day in Dordrecht

The GBR Boys 4x100m Freestyle Relay team won gold on the opening day of the LEN European Junior Swimming Championships in Dordrecht, Netherlands.

Katie Nesbitt also secured GBR’s first multi-classification European Junior gold medal by winning the MC 100m Freestyle.

The British relay team of Duncan Scott, Martyn Walton, Miles Munro and Jack Smith finished in 3:19.78 to secure the title ahead of the German team in 3:22.09 and the Italian team in 3:22.30.

Less than a second separated the top four teams in the heats, but the British team booked lane four and dominated the race.

In the Girls 4x100m Freestyle Relay the GBR team of Mari Davies, Magdalena Cygan, Hannah Featherstone and Georgina Boyle, finished just outside the medals in 3:48.40 for fourth place.

In the individual races Holly Hibbott (Southport) took eight seconds off her fastest time to win silver in the 800m Freestyle in 8:41.41 and set a new British Age Group record (14 Yrs). Simona Quadarella (Italy) took gold in 8:40.21 with Linda Caponi (Italy) third in 8:41.72.

Rosie Rudin (NOVA Centurion) and Georgia Coates (City of Leeds) both reached the podium in the 400m Individual Medley.

Rudin posted a personal best 4:43.56 to win silver behind Spain’s Africa Zamorano Sanz in 4:41.96, while Coates won bronze with a 4:44.60 PB.

Daniel Jervis just missed out on a medal in the 400m Freestyle. The Swansea University swimmer took almost three seconds off his personal best to finish in 3:52.80 behind Mykhaylo Romanchuk in 3:52.19.

In the two multi-classification finals of the day, Katie Nesbitt (S14) won gold in the MC 100m Freestyle touching in 1:02.91 to give 911 points ahead of Hungary’s Bianka Pap (782 points) and Germany’s Janina Savelsberg (775 points). Megan Richter was eighth with 629 points (1:11.28).

In the boys MC 100m Backstroke Ryan Nicholls (S14) touched in 1:05.28 to take silver with 814 points while Craig Harris (SM14) won bronze with a time of 1:06.71 to give 763 points. Matthew Wylie (S9) finished sixth in 1:14.60 (567 points).

In the semi-finals Amelia Clynes (City of Leeds) and Isobel Grant (City of Sheffield) both made it through to tomorrow’s 200m Butterfly final after finishing in 2:12.60 and 2:13.64 respectively.
Mari Davies (Swim Gwynedd) also secured her place in the 100m Freestyle final after finishing fifth with a time of 57.08.

In the Backstroke races Luke Greenbank (Cockermouth) and Joseph Hulme (Plymouth Leander) will be competing in the 100m Backstroke final after posting times of 55.76 and 56.06 respectively, while Brittany Hortonn (City of Birmingham) secured her place in the girls 200m Backstroke with a time of 2:15.01.
